Designing Hillarious Combat

The theme for the 2022 Global Game Jam was "Duality", and my team was determined to twist that theme in the most hilarious way possible.

At the time, we thought that defeating enemies by slapping them was the funniest way to go about combat design. We took it a step further and created a sticky hand mechanic to pull enemies in.... and slap them more.

Action Based Level Design

Slapping enemies was only one-half of duality. To cover the other half, we decided to repurpose the grappling mechanic as a movement option, allowing the player to cross wide chasms with their sticky hand, as well as grapple toward larger enemies instead of pulling them in.

With these mechanics in place, I designed all the game's levels to provide a continuous flow of action, strategically placing enemies and objects to guide players from one level section to the next.

Description

Play as Saul Slapman, the greatest slapper in the world, in his emotional journey to stop the public from drinking Slap Soda. Use your left hand to slap the opposition and your right hand to fling a sticky hand and grapple onto objects. Developed for the 2022 Global Game Jam.
